The assassination was planned by a group of six people (one Bosniak and five Serbs) that were part of the Young Bosnia Movement. The reason for America to become involved in WW1 was Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare, which had already sunk several American merchant ships. A Spanish-American War song, “Good-Bye, Dolly Gray,” was revived and became a much bigger hit than it had been just two years before. Awareness of the conflict among the people of the United States is evidenced in American popular culture.
